Course Descriptions
Ad Majorem
Ad Majorem is an introduction into Jesuit education. Meeting once per cycle, Freshman student will learn about the Ignatian roots and traditions of Scranton Prep.
Advanced American History
Advanced American History seeks to provide the student with a college-level survey course of the development of the American nation from the founding of Jamestown to its present position of world influence. Throughout the course, pedagogically speaking, the student is trained in the inquiry approach to analyze, synthesize and interpret historical data in a creative and critical methodology. At the end of the program, seniors should be able to make informed judgments based on rational and intuitive deductive processes. To that end, emphasis is placed on those historical events and trends that seem most important for understanding our own time. The student should appreciate democratic America humanitarian role as but one cultural heritage among the many of the planet.
Advanced Chemistry I
This introductory course in chemistry is intended for students who have proven via placement test that their science problem solving skills are strong enough to cover material at a faster pace than the Chemistry 1 course. This course has the same qualitive emphasis on traditional content areas of a high school chemistry course while exceeding national standards. There is also the same integrated hands-on laboratory component as Chemistry 1.
Advanced Computer Applications
This course is a full-year senior elective for students who have an interest in increasing their computing skills. Advanced Computer Applications stresses topics including advanced word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software along with an introduction to databases and graphics editing. In addition, students will explore other advanced topics based on their interests and abilities.
Algebra 1
This course introduces the student to the basic structure of mathematics through a thorough study of the real number system. An understanding of the concepts and mastery of necessary skills is emphasized throughout. The need for precision and exactness in expression and thought is constantly stressed. Other topics covered are equations, inequalities, rational and irrational expressions.
Algebra II
This course is a continuation of Algebra I with the repeated topics covered in greater depth than in the first year. New topics include complex numbers, radical functions, and quadratic functions.
Algebra II / Trigonometry
Students in Algebra II/Trigonometry cover the same topics as Algebra II in the first semester. The second semester covers newer topics of exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Significant time is devoted to the study of angle measurement, trigonometric properties and graphs, and right triangle trigonometry.
American Cultures
The American Cultures course provides sophomores with a survey of the history and cultural development of the United States using a multi-cultural approach. With an emphasis on the major events which helped shape our nation, this course attempts to engender in the students an understanding and appreciation of America and all its people. In the process, students learn and use a variety of techniques meant to enhance the critical thinking skills necessary for understanding and participating in our pluralistic society.
American Government and Economic Systems
American Government and Economic Systems (A.G.E.S.) is a junior/senior elective divided into two semesters. The first focuses on U.S. government—its origins, Constitution, branches, federalism, civil rights, political parties, and media influence. Students study the structures and functions of federal and state government, including independent agencies and national affairs. The second semester explores economic systems and policies, covering market fundamentals, supply and demand, business structures, and the role of money. It also examines national economics—fiscal/monetary policy, the Federal Reserve, taxation, budgeting, and personal finance.
